TL;DR: Much better than old beta, but still incomparable to the current iOS app.
I was one of the users who were very critical of the previous beta. I have just spent some time with the new beta and wanted to share my feedback.
First thing I noticed is that performance is radically improved, great! One can still see occasional lags and startup time is significant, but these are not critical issues.
Overall functioning of the app is also improved compared to previous beta. Of course lots of things in dashboard/menus are broken or missing, but I assume you are aware of that. It does not seem possible to edit the lists, which makes the app unusable for normal learning yet.
There are some big technical glitches - from time to time all of the UI reloads; character input (strokes) stops working; due count is different from the native app.
My biggest complaints are these two:
-
learning flow is nowhere near as smooth as it used to be. This is a result of tens of little things and changes: autoadvance is weird/broken, there’s no example sentence, there’s no Pleco button, there’s no audio or tactile feedback, can’t skip current item, no animations or gestures. I understand the need for changes, but the fact is that almost every single bit of the review flow is currently worse than it was in the native app. Perhaps a safer approach would be to rebuild old UX with the new technology, and only make the changes after it works.
-
overall design - I am not sure if this is the final thing or it’s just a technical demo before you hire a designer, but the entire design looks like something made by a programmer. Some UI elements feel very alien to iOS (there are popup menus on the lists!), elements that try to imitate native ones (navbar) are of inconsistent size, there’s no bounce on the scrolls, standard gestures (scroll from left edge to go back) do not work. Overall, it just doesn’t feel like a premium mobile app. If functionality of the app (see my first point) is restored, I could live with all these things, but the entire experience of using the app is not pleasant anymore.
For now I’m going to stick with the old app.
